Have You Heard?: Self-Titled - Diminish The Gods
Artist: Diminish The Gods
Title: Self-Titled EP
Genre: Technical Death Metal
In this edition of Have You Heard? we go back to 2015, when Sydney five piece technical death metal band Diminish The Gods released their debut self titled EP. Call it what you will, whether it's deathcore, death metal, technical death metal or melodic death metal, this little gem straight up kicks a lot of arse. After quite a number of listens I start to ask the question: Why aren't these guys top contenders within the Australian death metal scene? Perhaps they will be very soon. With the band working on their next release as we speak, it's not a matter of 'if' but 'when' Diminish The Gods become the next big thing.
The influences are clear, but not so much so that they're ripping off other bands. Instead, they take inspiration from artists like Lamb Of God, Within The Ruins, and The Black Dahlia Murder, and put their own groove on it. The end result is an EP that is ferocious and savage, with breakdowns that are near earth-shattering, but with contrasting melody that makes the heavier sections even more brutal. The guitars aren't the only thing that shred on this 22-minute EP, as the vocalist gives a performance that would give most people a sore throat just listening to him. The drumming on here is blistering and heavy, packing a punch and working as a dynamic backbone for the other components on this terrific debut.
So there you have it. A hidden gem that deserves much more attention, to be perfectly honest. I can tell you as far as first releases go, Diminish The Gods definitely hit the nail on the head with a ten tonne hammer on this EP. I can't wait to see what they bring to the table next.
