Genre: Instrumental Rock

Review by Nicole Roberts

Australian instrumental rock band, sleepmakeswaves, are back with a massive third full-length album, Made of Breath Only, to show exactly why they’ve earnt their devoted fan base and their reputation of instrumental rock greats. With the great success of 2014s Love of Cartography, earning both an ARIA nomination and a J Award nomination, it was always going to be a difficult feat for the Sydney quartet to not only create an album in which the quality was comparable, but also one that surpassed everything they’d previously done.

With Made of Breath Only, they’ve done the near impossible, making an album that contains such wildly different sounds and moods that each song has its own distinctive resonance, while still making a cohesive body of work. Whilst they’ve always been an incredibly progressive band, and each release has always shown just how versatile they are and how much pride they take in pushing their musical boundaries and exploring things other bands wouldn’t dare to, this latest releases takes things to a whole different level.

Starting strong with the serene, atmospheric ‘Our Days Were Polar’, with its otherworldly feel, the band manage to achieve an enormous song with minimal sound sources. Seamlessly diving into the much more guitar heavy track ‘Worlds Away’, sleepmakeswaves shows us the wide variety of experiences and moods we’re going to experience on this ride of a release.

With stand outs from the album including the single currently loved by triple j, ‘Tundra’, and ten-and-a-half-minute epic, ‘The Edge of Everything’, as well as slightly heavier track ‘Into the Arms of Ghosts’, the album is packed full of great songs. The best thing about the album is while it stands together phenomenally as a collection of music, every single track is strong and could easily have been the lead single from the release.

All in all, this album is brilliant and I really can’t find a fault with it. Not only is it musically a fantastic album, but with engineering and mixing from Nick DiDia (Rage Against The Machine, Karnivool, Pearl Jam), it's also of an incredibly high production standard as well. From the beginning to the end, there isn’t a weak spot or any moment or song where you think to yourself that it should’ve been left out. The quartet have really outdone themselves with this release, and if there’s one instrumental or rock album you pick up anytime soon, it should be this one.

4.5 out of 5 stars.
