Binge & Purgatory - Deez Nuts

Artist: Deez Nuts Album: Binge & Purgatory Genre: Hardcore/Metalcore

Review by Steve Jenkins

Ten years and five studio albums deep into their career, Melbourne based Deez Nuts have stuck to their usual formula of massive breakdowns and punchy riffs, which is what they do best. Binge & Purgatory is another solid release from the hardcore outfit that is also heavily influenced by rap, with vocalist JJ Peters spitting fire alongside the hard as nails music.

Right away this album packs a mean punch, getting things off to a heavy start with a short intro followed by the mosh-pit friendly track 'Purgatory' getting things going. The production quality is high and polished but it still sounds raw and gritty, much like a lot of their music. If you love crunchy and hard-hitting bass then you're in for a treat as Deez Nuts bring that good bass tone along with the aggressive drumming. The guitars are crisp and heavy, but certainly not technical if that's what you're looking for. It's very much standard hardcore songwriting with a simple yet effective direction that works well. The vocal stylings from JJ Peters are getting better with each release, still keeping the gang vocals and chant along lyrics. Peters also introduces some melody at certain times which keeps things sounding quite fresh, rather than only having the usual speedy vocal delivery that he's known for. When listening to the smash-mouth hardcore mixed with rap vocals, I get reminded of Suicidal Tendcencies and Cyco Mike, which is complimentary to Deez Nuts.

A very cool moment on the track 'Lessons Learned' sees Hatebreed frontman Jamey Jasta make a special appearance with his enraged singing. The track 'Cakewalk' also has a moment that reminds me of the famous closing riff from the classic Pantera song 'Domination', which could be a total coincidence or perhaps an ode to the legendary metal band.

It's not a far venture from what Deez Nuts what brought to the table on previous albums, but that's not really a bad thing when you consider their success so far. It's half an hour of energetic and powerful music that is going to please existing fans and probably see their brand continue to grow. If you're looking for a fun album that isn't necessarily your traditional hardcore sound, but still embodies the genre with hard breakdowns, gang shout vocals, fast riffs and an overall rambunctious performance, then you'll love this.

7 out of 10.
