#wcw - Tatiana Shmailyuk of Jinjer

Our first #wcw had to be a great one. Using this weekly feature as a way to shine a light on talented, brilliant females in rock, metal and alternative music, I knew that the woman I chose to be the inaugural choice had to epitome exactly what qualities we love in our female musicians - talent, dedication and absolute badassery. That's how I came to choose Tatiana Shmailyuk, the ludicrously talented vocalist of Jinjer.

If you haven't heard of Jinjer, they're the Ukrainian groove metal/metalcore band making big noise right now. With three releases under their belt, Inhale, Don't Breathe in 2013, Cloud Factory in 2014 and their most recent release, 2016's King Of Everything, and a slew of tours, the band have really created a buzz around their name for being a talented and hardworking band

Shmailyuk's vocals are dexterous, powerful and impressive. Whether it's her impeccable cleans or her demonic screams and growls, her ability to go from soulful singing to guttural snarls is nothing short of mind blowing. While some may compare her to female vocalists like Alissa White-Gluz or Courtney LaPlante, you'll find her inspiration actually comes from heavy hitters like Mikael Åkerfeldt from Opeth and Randy Blythe from Lamb of God, as well as Sandra from Guano Apes and Shamaya from Otep. Apart from that, she's also a fan of folk music of Africa and America, jazz, blues, and rock 'n' roll, with Imelda May being a huge inspiration for her.

Not only is she a great vocalist, she's also a strong songwriter as well. Writing most of her lyrics and vocal melodies, the hardworking frontwoman has proven herself to be a talented writer.

One of the other inspiring things about this singer, other than her crazy vocals, is just how hard she's had to work to make music. Coming from a place where society doesn't traditionally see their musicians as hardworking citizens, but instead as moochers, she's had to bust ass to get to where she is today. Being a dominant force as a female vocalist in a genre where the ratio of men to women is overwhelming is difficult enough, but to do it when coming from somewhere that wasn't exactly supportive of musicians? That really can't have been easy.

Hardworking, talented, and charismatic, the frontwoman has quickly established herself as a shining light in metal. Her vocals are so unbelievable, if you didn't see with your own eyes that such ludicrously different voices can come out of the same person, you might not quite believe it. Earning her reputation as a phenomonal vocalist, dynamic live performer, and talented songwriter, if you haven't already had a listen to Jinjer, do yourself a favour and check them out.
