Interview: Nick Woods from Direct Hit!

Milwaukee punk quartet Direct Hit! will be making their way to Australia this week for the very first time. Accompanying them will be a delicious buffet of assorted punk rock bands which makes for a fantastic showing of local talent. After the massive success of their 2016 LP Wasted Years. which was released on the iconic Fat Wreck Chords, these chaotic Americans are going to show Aussie punters some of the best and most mind-bending live shows we've ever witnessed. We caught up Nick Woods as they prepare to begin their tour, and we had a quick chat about how excited they are to play down under.

Hey guys, how's everything going for Direct Hit lately?

Fuckin great dude!

You're heading over here to Australia for the first time ever this August/September, are you excited to play some shows here? What are you most looking forward to about touring here?

Pumped as fuck! Looking forward to eating as many wild animals as possible, and sweating all over strangers who pay for the privilege.

Your LP Wasted Mind was a huge success, are you stoked with the reception and positivity you recieved for the record?

Of course! It brought us a free to trip to fucking Australia, so I definitely can’t and won’t complain.

What's it like being on the Fat Wreck Chords family? It's an impressive punk rock label, what's it like working with those guys?

We’ve watched Fat from afar since we were teenagers, so it’s incredible to be able to make music that has their name on it. They’ve given us a lot of support to be able to do stuff we wouldn’t be able to without their help.

It's well into the second half of 2017, do you have any highlights from this year so far?

Our late-night set at Pouzza Fest in Montreal is probably my favorite so far. Smaller club, packed house, lots of pals we’ve met playing music over the years all in one place.

What's one of the strangest or funniest stories that you've got to tell from being on the road and touring?

One time on our first tour, Danny pissed on a broom and wiped my face with it because he’s an asshole.

You've gained a reputation for being an incredible live band. What can Aussie fans expect from Direct Hit as you prepare to show us your amazing live performances?

You get to watch a man who smokes casually, eats trash food every day, and never exercises attempt to do calisthenics without rest onstage for 45 minutes straight every night. I might die at any moment. Prepare yourselves.

Snickers or Reece's?

Snickers. More substance, and Reese’s rot my teeth and give me gut rot.

What bands, whether they're punk, rock, hardcore or whatever, inspire you and still get you pumped up to this day when you hear their music?

Andrew WK’s “I Get Wet” is my favorite album. But mostly it’s just small bands we see on tour, and our friends groups. That personal connection is what makes me pay attention. I feel like totally new and different sounds are a rarity these days.

Australia has a wide range of awesome beers to try, do you guys like to party and partake in some alcoholic beverages? We recommend you try Victoria or Melbourne Bitter first of all. Cheers!

We mostly drink gas, but I’ll give em a try. Thanks dude!
