Everybody's Talkin' - The Dives
Artist: The Dives
Album: Everybody's Talkin' EP
Review by Nicole Roberts
The Dives, one of New Yorks most hardworking rock bands, have recently released a catchy EP showcasing exactly what we can expect to see from this exciting new band. Full of energy, potential, and feel good hooks, it's a rock release that's pop enough that it's got some toe-tapping riffs and the high energy to make you move, but rock enough that it will carry a certain power onstage.
Kicking it off with 'Make It Like The Movies', an upbeat song laden with contagious, body movin', hand clappin' rhythm, the EP starts strong and keeps the momentum through each song. Whether it's the Sex Pistols-esque opening riff of 'Anticipation', which quickly switches gears from punk to a pop-rock track with a chorus that will get stuck in your head, or the slower, more moody 'Everybody's Talkin', which serves as the bands ballad for the EP, the release keeps it interesting from start to finish.
The final track 'Man, Oh Mandy' would have to be my favourite. From the intriguing opening riff, the track sounds like it's a love song straight out of the 60s, with it's classic rock influenced sound and crooning vocals. It's a solid end to a promising EP.
There's no doubt that the entire release is a whole lot of fun to listen to. A modern attempt at reviving classic rock n roll from the 70s and 80s, all while adding a more up to date feel to keep it relevant. If you're a fan of bands like The Struts, you should give them as a listen as they do sound similar enough that comparisons can be drawn. All in all, a promising and solid debut release from the New York rockers.
7.5 out of 10 stars.
