Review by Tomina Vincent

My first encounter with Circa Survive was in 2007 when I saw them on tour with My Chemical Romance. I had no idea who they were, but from the very first song, I was absolutely flabbergasted by this band. Anthony Green has one of the most memorable and extraordinarily beautiful voices in rock music, and the band behind him is a formidable force. To see a band like this without expecting it was a shock to the system, in the best way possible. I've followed them ever since, and to get to review their new album The Amulet is an honour for me. Here are my thoughts.

This is Circa Survive at their absolute best. 10 tracks of ferocious and beautifully eclectic music, designed to jolt you awake and stand you to attention. I find it very difficult to concentrate or multitask listening to this. You need to sit down, put your feet up, and explore.

The album is awash with incredible vocals, as expected from Circa Survive. But The Amulet is not only their most ambitious release to date, it is also their most progressive. Everything is turned up to 11, including the complexity. The album flows perfectly, and despite missing big hooks and melodies, it manages to remain remarkably transfixing. This is a band that used to be mentioned alongside acts like The Used and Taking Back Sunday back in the day, but to me, they never quite fit the mould. There are layers upon layers of superbly mixed audio, with each layer peeling off every time you listen. The lyrics are somewhat sombre and contemplative, carrying a melancholic undertone and a sense of artistic maturity befitting a band of this age. With over a decade on the scene, Circa Survive don't need to prove anything to anyone, and you can really hear it - this is just them doing exactly hat they want. it's slower, it's calmer, it's genuine.

The Amulet is an absolute triumph. A beautifully executed record that should in my opinion take its place among the greatest releases of 2017.
