Review by Nicole Roberts
In all honesty, I hadn't really heard much of Torrential Thrill until their sophomore album, Nothing As It Seems, came skidding through my email. The follow up to 2015's Mars, Nothing As It Seems took me a few listens before I felt like I could actually sit down and write a review of it. That's not because it was bad, but because it took so many twists and turns that I felt like I needed to really listen to it a few times to really appreciate it - it's definitely an album that'll grow on you the more you listen to it.
The opening track, 'Escape With Your Life', is a good start to the album, and one of my personal favourites. It's the perfect mixture of hard and soft, a hard balance to strike in a rock song. 'Not My President' is a ballsy song in the current environment. So many believe that politics should stay out of music (even though rock was built on anti-establishment views and has always been home to some of the most outspoken and passionate musicians) so it's always good to see a band stick to their guns and make their voices heard. 'Human Zoo' sounds like the lovechild to Van Halen and Steel Panther. 'Hail Mary' is a hard rocking track that will make any rock lover happy while 'Waking The Neighbours' will cement them as a lifelong fan.
Torrential Thrill have really nailed this album, delivering an exciting and interesting hard rock album. With each listen, you'll find something new to like about them, whether it's a new hook that'll get stuck in your head, or a new solo that'll have you playing the air guitar with the best of them. I'd highly recommend picking up a copy of Nothing As It Seems.
