Review by Tomina Vincent

Ne Obliviscaris have become a main stay in the international metal scene, and we are very lucky that they're based right here in Australia. Their 2014 epic Citadel took them around the world and cemented them as one of the most beloved heavy acts in Australia and overseas. When I heard the first single 'And Within The Void We Are Breathless' from their latest offering Urn, I was convinced that this new record is about to generate even more buzz around the band: an assumption that was only confirmed once I heard it.

Urn is a little bit different: a more melodic and dynamic offering. Don't let the track listing fool you - there are 6 titles, but nearly 50 minutes of music. Spellbinding, enchanting infusion of numerous genres in the heavy realm, likely to please metal and progressive rock fans alike. Urn must have been a colossal undertaking. The musicianship on display here is one of world class quality, and the bands songwriting prowess is utterly stunning. The dance between extreme metal vocals and thundering drums, and the softer edge of clean vocals, violin, strings and acoustic guitars, is elegant and tasteful, as well as beautifully evocative. The band is constantly walking the line between classic metal and innovative progressive rock, thus managing to encompass decades of music and different influences into one album. The flow of the record is well calculated, and it becomes very apparent on my second listen, that there really is no way to listen to single songs out of context. Urn isn't just an album, its an experience.

This may be a big call, but I believe Ne Obliviscaris have created one of the greatest heavy records of our generation. The band invites you to enjoy huge, bombastic moments, and quiet escapes into a realm of their own design, and you'll never want to leave. Urn is a masterpiece.

10 out of 10.
