Review by Tomina Vincent

Von Hertzen Brothers are a band so diverse, interesting, and listenable, that fans of almost any music genre can find something to get hooked on. Primarily occupying a vast part of the progressive rock spectrum, this trio is phenomenally entertaining and best of all, constantly evolving. Their new album War Is Over is the very testament to their musical evolution.

In true Von Hertzen spirit, this record is a concoction of so many genres and styles, that its most impressive feature is the fact that it manages to stay cohesive, and pull off so many things at once. An explosion of groove, progressive rock experimentation and weighty riffs, War Is Over is entertaining from start to finish. Pure rock'n'roll meets Steven Wilson, then dashes across the field to play wits some blues and even punk.

One moment you think you might be listening to Queens of The Stone Age, and Haken the next. The listener is constantly surprised at every turn. The band remains impossible to predict and keeps you on the edge of your seat. This is their 7th studio album, and you can tell that they have reached a point where they can really do whatever they like, and the pure joy of musical discovery accompanies every single track.

War Is Over is an explosion of colour and character. One of the very few releases I've heard this year that has truly put a smile on my face. An astoundingly fun listen.

9 out of 10.
