Album Review: Chapters - Lycanthrope
Release Date: February 16, 2018
Review by Tomina Vincent
Lycanthrope have been around the block a few times, and they have done a fine job of keeping the interest of both the heavy music community and Triple J Unearthed. Their single "The Golden Mile" reaches number 4 on the Unearthed charts and saw the band share the stage with giants like Northlane and In Hearts Wake. Now they are about to release their debut album, and we were lucky enough to get our hands on it.
Lycanthrope have delivered a blisteringly heavy record with a furious energy and the grit of utter artistic confidence. Whilst incorporating many elements of classic metal, post-hardcore and even thrash, the band manage to create a blend of old-school and modern that is sure to please any heavy music fan. Tracks like "Gambit" and "Bitter Resistance" bring on the chugging heaviness, but it’s quickly evident that’s not all Lycanthrope are about: not only can they write a great heavy track, they can also write a track like "Follow My Name" and take things into a completely different direction at the drop of a hat. This album has all the ingredients to be truly impressive - a driving rhythm section, sultry guitars and ferocious vocals come together seamlessly, building not only continuity and cohesiveness, but also making Chapters a very interesting and varied listen. While the production is a touch rough around the edges, it works perfectly for the genre and I’m an instant fan.
Lycanthrope have created something truly special. You will find deliciously heavy sections, sing-along choruses and a lot of memorable moments here, and a record overall sure to slide perfectly into your collection, somewhere between Parkway Drive and Aversions Crown. A thoroughly enjoyable listen.
