Guitar-wielding legend Slash is back, once again teaming up with frequent collaborators Myles Kennedy & The Conspirators, with his newest offering ‘Living The Dream’. Taking a break from the mammoth ‘Not In This Lifetime’ tour with Guns N’ Roses, Slash hit the studio to produce his fourth studio album (the third with Myles and Co). As a lifelong Gunners and Slash fan, I definitely went into this with high hopes, and thankfully, I wasn’t let down.

The album has some great, vintage Slash tracks, which would be at home on any of his previous offerings. Tracks such as ‘Driving Rain’, a personal favourite with its great melodies and soaring vocals from Kennedy, and ‘Mind Your Manners’ with its catchy as hell chorus, stand out as immediate highlights. ‘Sugar Cane’ is an interesting musical sidestep from the grand scheme of the album, but with its quick riffs and driving beat, it’s a super fun song.

Don’t worry, we get treated to plenty of Slash’s iconic guitar work, especially prevalent in the emotive ‘The One You Loved Is Gone’ and the powerful ‘The Great Pretender’. The album ends on a strong note, with the rockin’ ‘Boulevard of Broken Hearts’.

There are a couple of tracks which, while good tunes, were a little lacklustre in comparison. ‘Read Between The Lines’ and ‘Serve You Right’ both felt a little like they were holding something back, at least in comparison to how balls-to-the-wall Slash and co normally go. They’re still solid track, but they are definitely the weaker points of the album, if I had to choose any.

'Living The Dream' as a whole is a strong, fun piece of work. While it was mostly full of great tracks, there were a few that fell slightly short of the rest – not quite in filler territory, but not quite in killer territory either. Thankfully, the album as an entirety is a great listen, with plenty of impressive guitar work from Slash, coupled with Kennedy’s soaring vocals to pack a dynamic punch. If you’re a fan of Slash, World On Fire, or just rock music in general, I’d say you’re going to like Living The Dream.

7 out of 10.
