Melbourne Hardcore Outfit Born Free Release Bold New Single

Melbourne punk/hardcore dynamos Born Free have resurfaced after a notable absence from the Australian heavy scene, and it’s clear that they’re ready to take a stand. Having recently signed to Resist Records, the rebellious five-piece announced the release of their bold, brash new single “Blinded”, which was unleashed to all streaming services on Friday March 15 to give fans a tantalising little taste of the full album to come.

Recorded at Black Lodge Studios with the inimitable Mike Deslandes of High Tension, Born Free’s forthcoming record is the first to feature new member Josh Manitta (Carpathian, Warbrain), whose creative influence in the band has resulted in a more melodic, complex approach to songwriting, compared with that of 2017 release “Upon My Head” and 2015’s “Sorrow”. With this new release, the band further explores the role of melody through further utilising vocalist Nathan’s clean singing and promises their “heaviest album to date”.

Clocking in at barely two and a half minutes, “Blinded” makes a short and sharp statement protesting, in true punk form, about the human condition and the deteriorating state of the environment we live in. Punchy, driving guitar riffs fuel the controlled rage of this assertive track, while the new addition of smooth, almost menacing clean vocals lends a finesse that contrasts with the aggression of the classic punk harshes. The defiant attitude and breakdown section of “Blinded” speak to Born Free’s hardcore influences, yet the often highly thrashy guitars evoke distinctively Metallica and Slayer vibes. It’s a lot to pack into such a brief track, but Born Free pull it off very cohesively. If “Blinded” is anything to go by, fans have a killer new album to look forward to from these guys.
