Album Review: Killswitch Engage - Atonement

Artist: Killswitch Engage

Album: Atonement

Genre: Metalcore

Review by Sam Radojcin

Metalcore. For some it’s the gospel while for others it’s a dirty word and being a prominent off shoot of the metal genre in the early to mid 2000’s with a myriad of acts breaking through, there were some great acts and there are others better left forgotten. But without question, one of the biggest and most prominent acts the genre has spawned is the one and only Killswitch Engage, who have just entered their 20th year as a band and have dropped their eighth studio album, Atonement. Right from the start, 'Unleashed' hits a boxer throwing wildly with riffs, groove. Jesse Leach’s inimitable vocal attack comes from all angles, emanating in a pure display of what Killswitch Engage do very, very well.

The proceedings come hard and fast in tracks 'Know Your Enemy', 'Ravenous', 'Bite The Hand That Feeds', and the thrash fueled 'The Crownless King', where Testament's Chuck Bill lends his beastly growl. 'As Sure As The Sun Will Rise' sounds like it could have quite easily fit on Alive Or Just Breathing.

'I Am Broken Too', 'I Can’t Be The Only One' and the In Flames-esque 'Take Control' adopt more of a melodic approach without losing any impact or lessening the flow or overall pace. 'The Signal Fire' brings everything full circle with Howard Jones coming back home to duet with Jesse in a track that shows all is good in the Killswitch Engage universe.

Throughout Atonement’s duration, Killswitch Engage show they still have plenty left in the tank both musically and creatively, firing on all cylinders with their signature blend of heaviness, intensity and melodic infused metal. Like a fine wine (or beer in their case), they are only getting better with age. Let’s hope for 20 more years!

8 out of 10.
